Josepha Madigan TD today issued a strongly worded statement in support of MMRA’s stance on the Union Cafe plans. Josepha has been a staunch opponent of development which is not sustainable, balanced, and sympathetic to the local environment and architecture and considers it vital that the planning mistakes of the past are not repeated.

On Tuesday evening next 14th June Barry Saul, Chairman of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the MMRA will hold a joint meeting in the Community Centre at 8 pm, aimed at persuading the planning authorities not to grant permission for the current proposal which we believe is a badly designed, ill-conceived development which if approved will degrade our amenities and must be stopped at all costs. Catherine Martin TD and her colleague Councillor Karen Furlong today visited Mount Merrion and were briefed on the proposed plans to build a massive high rise structure on the Union Café site.

The MMRA is fully supportive of sustainable and balanced development and consider it vital that the planning mistakes of the past are not repeated.
For this reason, the MMRA is strongly opposed to unsuitable, badly designed and out of proportion developments which will lead to safety issues, traffic congestion and have a serious adverse impact on the local community.
The proposed development on the site of the Union Cafe premises on a narrow road, opposite a playground, near a school and a church is a perfect example of such ill-conceived development.
