The Dublin suburban townships

TALK by Séamas Ó Maitiu From the beginning of the 19th century the Dublin middle classes began to desert the city centre and set-up in self-governing townships. This had a detrimental effect on the overall development of the greater Dublin area, with resulting poverty, underemployment and appalling housing conditions. However the townships of Rathmines, Pembroke, Blackrock, Kingstown, Blackrock, Dalkey, Killiney, Clontarf, Kilmainham and Drumcondra achieved much in their own areas. Mainly in water supply, sewerage, paving, lighting, housing and education, The townships also left an impressive architectural legacy of magnificent town halls. Séamas Ó Maitiu, who has published on this topic, will explore the topic for us with the aid of numerous illustrations. 8.00pm, Thursday 5th January 2017 THE COMMUNITY CENTRE, MOUNT MERRION Admission:      Members No charge (see Season Membership) Non-Members:            €4.00   (Students €2.00) Season 2016-17 Membership:                         €20 per person / €30 per couple While the Society will endeavour to deliver the published agenda, lectures and speakers may be changed due to circumstances outside its control email: mountmerrionhistoricalsociety@gmail.com web site:...
