Distillery Owner
successor to Daniel O’Connell as Lord Mayor of Dublin

presented by
Dr Beatrice Doran

George Roe was a major figure in the business and professional world in 19th century Dublin. As owner of George Roe & Co. he was the largest producer of whiskey in Europe. As Alderman George Roe, a member of Dublin Corporation, he succeeded Daniel O’Connell as Lord Mayor of Dublin. He was, among other things, High Sheriff of Dublin, Chairman of the Great Industrial Exhibition of 1853, Vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce, Director of the Kingstown Railway Company as well as a Governor of King’s Hospital School. George Roe’s main residence was at Nutley in  Donnybrook, an estate with magnificent gardens and a farm of over 200 acres. There he entertained lavishly with guests that included Queen Victoria, the Lord Lieutenant and Daniel O’Connell.

In her talk, Beatrice will expand further on Roe’s interesting life.
